Urgent warning as Poland scrambles fighter jets after Russia blasts border

A few months ago, a Russian missile briefly entered Polish airspace during a large-scale air attack on Ukraine by Moscow. In response, Poland scrambled fighter jets on the night of May 25-26 to secure its airspace. Poland's Operational Command warned residents in the southeastern part of the country via a message on social media platform X, advising them of potential jet activity.

The statement noted: "Tonight, we are observing intense long-range aviation activity by the Russian Federation, related to missile strikes on targets in the western part of Ukraine. The last recorded activity of Russian aviation targeting western Ukraine occurred on the night of May 7-8."

Later, the command issued an update, stating: "With the conclusion of the Russian Federation's long-range missile strikes on targets in western Ukraine, the operation of military aviation in Polish airspace has ended, and the deployed forces have returned to standard operations.

"The Polish Army continues to monitor the situation in Ukraine and remains ready to ensure the safety of Polish airspace."

Poland's concerns over potential Russian airspace violations are well-founded. In March, a Russian cruise missile reportedly entered Polish airspace for about 39 seconds during another significant missile and drone attack on Ukraine. A similar incident occurred in late December, prompting the Polish Foreign Ministry to summon Russian chargé d'affaires Andrei Ordash to demand an explanation and an immediate cessation of such activities.
