Joe Biden Vows Ukraine Will Not Use US Weapons To Strike Russia

In response to the Russian offensive in northeast Ukraine, the United States and several other countries have permitted Kyiv to use Western-donated weapons to strike targets within Russian territory.

President Joe Biden, speaking in Washington, emphasized on Thursday that US-supplied weapons would not be used to attack Moscow, even after authorizing Ukraine to target locations inside Russia with Western arms.

"They're authorized to be used in proximity to the border when they're being used on the other side of the border to attack specific targets in Ukraine," Biden stated in an interview with ABC News. "We're not authorizing strikes 200 miles into Russia and we're not authorizing strikes on Moscow, on the Kremlin."

US officials revealed last week that Washington had relaxed some restrictions, enabling Ukraine to defend its eastern Kharkiv region, which borders Russia. This shift in US policy was prompted by Russia's relentless bombardment of Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city.

Germany also announced that it had granted Ukraine permission to use German-delivered weapons to target locations in Russia.

Biden clarified that US-supplied weapons were intended for use "just across the border, from where they're receiving significant fire from conventional weapons used by the Russians to go into Ukraine to kill Ukrainians." The president made these comments while in France, attending events commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
