Russian strikes on Ukraine's Kharkiv region kill at least 11

On Sunday, Russia launched a missile strike on a busy lakeside resort near Ukraine's second-largest city and attacked nearby villages, resulting in at least 11 deaths and numerous injuries. These attacks are part of ongoing Russian offensives in the Kharkiv region in northeastern Ukraine.

Valentyna, a 69-year-old woman, stood with blood running down her face at the devastated resort. Her home was destroyed, and a bustling restaurant was obliterated. Her husband was killed by the water, where a crater now marks the spot amid rubble and bodies. "To lose my husband, to lose my house, to lose everything in the world, it hurts, it hurts me," she cried. "They (the Russians) are animals, why do they need to kill people?"

Prosecutors reported six deaths at the resort, one person missing, and 27 wounded. Rescuers noted that a second strike hit about 20 minutes after the first, targeting emergency crews in a "double tap" tactic.

"There were never any soldiers here," said Yaroslav Trofimko, a police inspector present during the second strike. "It was a Sunday, people were supposed to be here to rest, children were supposed to be here, pregnant women, resting, enjoying a normal way of life."

Later in the day, five more people were killed and nine injured in two villages in the Kupiansk district. Local governor Oleh Syniehubov reported that Russian forces used a self-propelled multiple rocket launcher in these attacks.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy renewed his call for Western allies to provide Kyiv with additional air defense systems to protect Kharkiv and other cities. "The world can stop Russian terror – and to do so, the lack of political will among leaders must be overcome," Zelenskiy stated on Telegram. He emphasized that deploying two Patriot missile defense systems in Kharkiv would make a significant difference. He also stressed the need for air defense systems for other cities and sufficient support for frontline soldiers to ensure Russia's defeat.
