Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen provided an update on the timeline for the arrival of F-16 fighter jets in Ukraine. Speaking at a joint press conference with Nordic leaders and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Stockholm, Sweden, Frederiksen initially stated that Denmark would deliver F-16s to Ukraine "within the next month." However, she later clarified her statement, indicating that Danish-provided F-16s would be operational in Ukrainian skies in the "next few months."
Ukraine has persistently appealed to its Western allies for F-16 support, citing the enhancement of its air defense capabilities, as emphasized by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
In August 2023, the Netherlands and Denmark pledged jointly to supply Ukraine with 61 American-built F-16s, following approval for transfer from the United States, a move hailed by Zelensky as pivotal. Denmark initially committed to delivering six fighter jets to Ukraine in the new year, but reports emerged in January suggesting a six-month delay in the delivery, reasons for which remain unclear.
While Denmark has pledged 19 fighter jets to Ukraine, Frederiksen disclosed that the forthcoming batch would only consist of five Danish aircraft. Additionally, the Netherlands has committed to providing 42 F-16s to Ukraine, with an initial delivery of 24, and Norway and Belgium have also pledged support.
Responding to inquiries about expediting Western arms deliveries to Kyiv, Frederiksen confirmed, "The first five planes from Denmark will be airborne in the coming month." A senior Ukrainian military source recently informed Reuters that Kyiv anticipates receiving its first F-16s from Western allies in June-July.
Frederiksen urged Western nations to provide ammunition and air defense systems to Ukraine, highlighting the urgency amid ongoing hostilities. She attributed Ukrainian losses primarily to a "lack of air defenses."
Ukraine has faced escalated attacks from Russian forces, including a two-pronged dawn assault in the Kharkiv region. Reports from TASS indicated Russian control over parts of Vovchansk, Kharkiv Oblast, with significant casualties reported. However, Ukraine's military refuted these claims, asserting control over Vovchansk and initiating evacuations from the region.
Zelensky affirmed reinforcement efforts in Kharkiv, vowing to repel Russian advances and describing ongoing battles as "fierce." The assault aligns with expectations of a significant Russian offensive preceding the arrival of F-16 support.
Surely there's a diplomatic solution here! A win/win for all?
ReplyDeleteThere will be one winner. Russian governers will not withdraw from Ukraine. SO their defence forces must be deafeted.
