Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his support for China's proposed approach to resolving the Ukraine crisis in an interview released on Wednesday. He emphasized Beijing's comprehensive understanding of the underlying issues contributing to the conflict.
Ahead of his upcoming visit to Beijing, Putin conveyed Russia's willingness to engage in dialogue and negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict, which has persisted for over two years.
According to a transcript on the Kremlin website, Putin praised China's strategy, noting its recognition of the root causes and global significance of the crisis. He also commended the additional principles outlined by President Xi Jinping during discussions with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, describing them as practical steps toward overcoming Cold War mentalities.
China initially presented a 12-point paper over a year ago outlining general principles for ending the conflict, but it received mixed reactions from Russia, Ukraine, and the United States. Despite criticisms, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov acknowledged it as a reasonable framework for discussion.
Xi's supplementary principles emphasize the importance of de-escalation, peace restoration, stability preservation, and minimizing global economic repercussions.
Russia perceives the conflict as a struggle against the "collective West," citing concerns over NATO expansion and military activities near its borders. While Russia characterizes its actions in Ukraine as a "special operation" against fascism, Ukraine and Western nations view it as unjustified aggression.
Despite the deepening ties between Russia and China, Beijing has refrained from directly supplying military aid to Russia during its invasion of Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's peace plan advocates for the withdrawal of Russian troops, restoration of pre-Soviet borders, and holding Russia accountable for its actions.
Although a peace summit is scheduled for Switzerland in June, Russia has rejected the invitation, dismissing it as inconsequential and insisting on recognition of "new realities." Ukraine has made significant efforts to persuade China to participate in preparatory talks for the summit.
