Missile strike has destroyed Russian Black Sea Fleet minesweeper, says Ukraine navy

A Ukrainian missile attack has reportedly destroyed a Russian minesweeper in occupied Crimea, according to Ukraine’s military. The Ukrainian Navy identified the vessel as the Kovrovets, a Project 266-M sea minesweeper, but did not disclose specific details of the attack. The Russian Ministry of Defence claimed Ukraine used US-supplied ATACMS missiles.

"Another bad day for the Russian Black Sea Fleet," the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence posted on X, alongside a targeting sight photo of the Kovrovets.

This incident intensifies pressure on the Kremlin's Black Sea Fleet, which has been tasked with enhancing its ship protection measures.

In April, the US covertly provided Ukraine with ATACMS missiles, capable of striking targets up to 190 miles away. These missiles, which can be launched from the HIMARS artillery systems used in Ukraine for two years, have been effective in destroying Russian command bases and depots far from the frontlines.

Ukraine began using ATACMS missiles against Russian forces three weeks ago, targeting radar systems, troop concentrations, and airfields in occupied Donbas and Crimea. The missiles can also be equipped with cluster bomb warheads, offering Ukrainian commanders more tactical options.

The Russian Ministry of Defence denied the destruction of its minesweeper, asserting that its air defenses intercepted all Ukrainian missiles.

"Nine ATACMS operational-tactical missiles and one drone were destroyed over the territory of the Republic of Crimea by air defense duty systems," it stated.

The Black Sea Fleet's performance since the war began in 2022 has frustrated Vladimir Putin. It has lost the strategically significant Snake Island, its flagship, and several warships and submarines while docked in occupied Crimea. Earlier this year, Putin replaced the fleet’s commander and demanded improved training to defend against missile and drone attacks.

The Kovrovets, constructed in 1974, was part of a Russian initiative to modernize Soviet-era warships.
