A "military maniac" could trigger World War 3 following reports of a drone strike in Russia, a close ally of Vladimir Putin has warned.
Dmitry Rogozin, 60, the former head of the Russian Space Agency, claims that a nuclear war could be imminent due to this recent development. Photos taken after an alleged Ukrainian drone attack showed damage to an early warning station in Russia.
A fire broke out at the Voronezh-DM radar station near Armavir in the Krasnodar region. Russians assert that these facilities are critical to Moscow’s Strategic Nuclear Forces' combat command system. Each station, costing around £13.15 million, provides radar coverage for 3,750 miles.
Rogozin, a pro-Putin senator, accused the US of having prior knowledge of the attack on the radar station without providing evidence. “We can assume it was either initiated by Kyiv or ordered by some military maniac in the Ukrainian Armed Forces seeking to ignite a Third World War,” he said. He dismissed the idea that the US was unaware of Ukrainian plans to target Russia’s missile defense system, citing American control over Kyiv’s military planning.
“Washington must fully answer for the past and future crimes of the reckless Ukrainian leadership,” he alleged. After the strike, he stated, “we are not just on the threshold but already on the edge of an irreversible collapse in the strategic security of nuclear powers, if the enemy’s actions are not stopped.”
The pro-war Telegram channel Military Informant added, “The enemy directly attacked a component of Russian nuclear security. A natural question arises whether there will be a significant response to such a strike or if they can continue targeting long-range radars with impunity, blinding our missile and space defense surveillance sectors.”
Ukraine likely attacked because the facility could provide early warning for occupied Crimea. Its main observation area includes the Balkans and the Mediterranean. It is one of ten such radar stations in Russia and may take 18 months to repair. Putin replaced Rogozin as head of the space agency and later appointed him a senator for the United Russia party.
The Sarmat missile, the largest in Putin’s nuclear arsenal, is described as an “unstoppable” 208-ton intercontinental weapon capable of reaching speeds of 15,880 mph. Before entering service, it is expected to be tested over the South Pole.
