Russia reeling as UK confirms over 460K troops killed or wounded in Ukraine

Russia has faced a significant loss of personnel in the ongoing war against Ukraine, as highlighted in a key speech. Vladimir Putin's forces have suffered "phenomenal losses" over the past two years, according to a speech delivered by Ankur Narayan, Britain's Politico-Military Counsellor at the UK delegation to the OSCE in Vienna.

Narayan stated that, 825 days since Russia's unlawful invasion of Ukraine, more than 465,000 Russian soldiers have been either wounded or killed. On May 29, he noted that Russia's daily casualty rate in Ukraine averages around 980. He explained, "Estimates in May put that number over 1000 per day, which is around 30,000 per month, marking the highest rate since the war began."

Additionally, Narayan mentioned that Ukraine has managed to reclaim 70,000 square miles of land initially seized by Russia during the early days of the invasion in February 2022. He also pointed out that Ukraine has dealt significant blows to the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Crimea.

In summary, Narayan emphasized, "President Putin is now over two years into a war he believed would last only three days. He is no closer to achieving his goal of subjugating Ukraine. Instead, Russia has suffered nearly half a million casualties and lost a substantial portion of its land and sea forces."

He concluded by noting the economic perspective, stating, "Economists do not need to be reminded about sunk cost fallacy. Objectively, the numbers indicate a phenomenal loss for Russia – in terms of lives, materiel, and credibility."
