What "trump cards" will the Ukrainian Armed Forces use to strike Russian territory: an expert on the aftermath of such attacks and the Kremlin's reaction
A significant advantage for Ukraine would be if its allies allowed the use of the entire arsenal of Western weapons available in the Ukrainian Armed Forces for strikes on Russia.
Granting permission to conduct deep strikes into Russian territory would provide Ukraine with crucial leverage in the war, potentially compelling Russia to cease its attacks on Ukraine's civilian infrastructure. Israeli military analyst David Sharp discussed this with 24 Kanal.
Sharp notes that while such permission wouldn't stop the Russian offensive or completely protect border regions, it would enable Ukraine to target key military sites within Russia, such as airfields, air defense systems, and artillery. According to Sharp, discussions in Europe and the United States are increasingly favoring granting Ukraine this capability.
"The question is with what weapons and by whom it will be allowed," Sharp remarked.
He elaborated that a significant advantage for Ukraine would be if the U.S. allowed the use of the entire arsenal of American weapons available to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, including ATACMS missiles, HIMARS systems, and artillery, for strikes on Russia.
Sharp stated that the ability to strike Russian border territories could provide the Ukrainian Armed Forces with tactical advantages, particularly in the Kharkiv region. With long-range weapons, Ukraine could destroy Russian artillery and air defense systems deep within Russia.
"This will provide the 'trump cards' that Ukraine currently has on the main fronts but lacks in Belgorod, Kursk, and Bryansk regions," Sharp noted.
In his opinion, there are many potential targets deep within Russia for long-range missiles like Storm Shadow and ATACMS, primarily airfields, which would create significant problems for the aggressor country.
The Russians would then be forced either to bolster the defense of these sites by increasing the number of air defense and electronic warfare systems or to relocate airfields, leading to substantial additional costs and decreased aviation efficiency.
Sharp believes that Ukraine's strikes on Russian rear areas could force Russia to reconsider and stop terrorizing the peaceful population of Ukraine with massive attacks on civilian infrastructure deep within Ukrainian territory.
"There could be a factor of mutual deterrence. It's not certain, but it cannot be ruled out," David Sharp added.
